All the Flavor — Without the Flavoring
What “Flavoring” Really Means
In packaged foods, “flavoring” can mean a wide range of manufactured ingredients designed to mimic taste and aroma. Sometimes it comes from a natural source. Sometimes it doesn’t. Either way, it’s typically processed, concentrated, and added back in.
Natural flavoring
“Natural” doesn’t mean whole. It usually means aroma compounds extracted, processed, and blended to create a consistent flavor profile — then added to food or tea.
Artificial flavoring
Artificial flavoring is built from synthesized compounds that imitate flavor and aroma. It’s engineered for consistency and cost — not transparency.
We’re not here to fear-monger. We’re here to be clear about what’s actually in the cup.
Why We Don’t Use Flavorings
- Transparency: We want you to recognize what you’re drinking.
- Integrity: The flavor should come from the plant — not an additive.
- Balance: Whole ingredients tend to taste better, steep better, and feel easier on the body.
- Trust: If it’s not something we’d brew for ourselves, it doesn’t make the blend.
When you taste our blends, you’re tasting the ingredients themselves.
What Creates Flavor Without Flavoring?
Flavor doesn’t need shortcuts. Tea leaves, herbs, flowers, roots, fruits, and spices already contain natural aromatic compounds — and when they’re blended thoughtfully, the cup becomes complex on its own.
Whole spices
Cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, citrus peel — they bring warmth and brightness naturally.
Fruits and florals
Rosehip, hibiscus, chamomile, elderflower — they create depth and aroma without extracts.
Tea character
Oolong, black, green, white — each leaf has its own body, finish, and natural complexity.
How to Spot Flavorings on a Label
If you’re trying to avoid flavoring ingredients, here are common terms to watch for on ingredient lists:
- Natural flavor / natural flavors
- Artificial flavor / artificial flavors
- Flavoring / flavors added
- “Essence,” “aroma,” “extract” (when it’s not clearly a whole plant ingredient)
Not all products using flavorings are “bad.” We simply choose a different standard — because we want the ingredient list to match what you taste.
The Ellen’s Standard
- No natural or artificial flavoring
- No added extracts
- No hidden additives
- Whole, visible ingredients you can identify
- Blended in small batches for balance, not shortcuts
If it tastes like fruit, spice, or flowers — it’s because fruit, spice, or flowers are actually in it.
